"The tremendous disparity in disability
law from one country to the next is
astounding. The only way to ensure that
every government in the world provides
equal treatment and respect to its citizens
with disabilities is to hold them
accountable to a set of standards
established through a Convention."
- Dr. William Kennedy Smith, Founder and Chairman of the CIR

About IDRM
|
The International Disability Rights Monitor (IDRM) is an international grass-roots research project designed to document and assess the status of people living with disabilities worldwide. It represents on ongoing collaboration between the Center for International Rehabilitation (CIR) and many international and national disability groups. The IDRM is the world’s only systematic international shadow monitoring report focusing on disability rights.
The mission of the International Disability Rights Monitor (IDRM) project is to promote the full inclusion and participation of people with disabilities in society and to advance the use of international humanitarian law in ensuring that the rights of people with disabilities are respected and enforced.
Created in 2003 by the Center for International Rehabilitation (CIR), today the IDRM relies on a grassroots network of researchers in more than 45 countries worldwide to document and assess the conditions of people with disabilities and the ongoing human rights violations that are a part of their daily lives.
So far, the IDRM has produced four reports: Regional Report of Asia (2005); Regional Report of the Americas (2004); Disability and Early Tsunami Relief Efforts in India, Indonesia and Thailand (2005); and the Regional Report of Europe (2007).
Not only do these reports provide information that would otherwise be unavailable, the information published in the IDRM reports prior to the European Report 2007, was vital to the passage of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
